Our vision: It is our belief that dreams are achieved not by limiting challenges but by challenging limitations |
Did You Know? Once Josh decides what the subject of his painting is going to be, he collects photo references. We take lots of pictures using a digital camera but he also looks through gardening books, seed catalogs and magazines.
Because Josh lacks fine motor skills, he is unable to draw. We use the digital camera to take different angles of flowers. From the camera we are able to load the photos into the computer. Using the computer allows me, his mother and the other half of the studio, to crop and move the images around until Josh okays the position. This can be time consuming and frustrating for me. Josh enjoys the process thoroughly.
The books, magazines and seed catalogs give Josh lots of ideas for color. We might take pictures of white hollyhocks but he might paint them deep red or pink. Once the flowers are positioned and sized, we print it out.
Every step of the work, Josh has done but, for the sake of speed, once some steps are learned and understood, I help him. He knows how to transfer his picture to paper using graphite carbon. All he needs is a simple line drawing to show him where the flowers are.
From there, he miskets( a liquid that covers the paper, saving the white. White is rarely used in watercolor) the foreground. Once all the flowers, leaves etc. are covered and dried, he starts on the background. This step gives him freedom to use big sweeping motion without worry that he will lose his line drawing.
Once he is happy with the background, we slowly start to remove the misket. Slowly, he works through the painting. He works from light to dark, being careful not to lose his whites. It’s slow work, paintings often taking him two to three months to complete.
He often works on four or five paintings at the same time. Watercolor is actually a good medium for him to work with. The water carries the pigment for him and his slow work style allows the paint to dry completely between sessions. |

<<<In Progress>>> I thought it would be interesting for you to see how Josh starts his work. Josh isn’t satisfied to stay in one place. He likes to expand his knowledge of technique and try new things.
The painting on the left is something new. Josh picks out his colors and drops it onto very wet paper. Once it’s dry, he decides what flower will fit. For the very blue and purple painting on the left, Josh has decided to paint double clematis. As the painting develops, we’ll post updates for you to see.
The painting on the right will be white peonies. He’s in the very beginning stages of these paintings. Check back in the next few months for updates to see how they progress.

Art From Carol Englehaupt |

Stage one in creating a Flight of Fancy. Watercolors are dropped onto wet paper and allowed to spread and move as it will. I might tilt the page to help the pigment disperse but I use no brush at this stage. I hope, in the future to try different techniques, such as salt, spray bottle, however the mood hits me at this beginning stage. |

Finished product (above). When coming up with the title, this poem came to me.
The Awakening
Sleeping in darkness, hidden from sight Waiting, protected against the cold.
Fragile, soft, potential hidden Cocooned and safe inside yourself.
Sunshine, warmth, hunger drives you Wakens you from dreamless sleep.
Pain, growth, birth comes harshly Changes time inevitably brings
Searching, hunting, strength relearning Feeding, growing, spring renews.
Stretching, reaching, sunshine drying Wings unfurl, beauty becomes you
Courage, faith, determination Lead you forward through the night
Metamorphosis of body and spirit Wakes you up and sets you free. |
